Strasbourg - a city of art, history and traditions
Founded by the Romans in 12 BC, Strasbourg («the town at the crossroads») has always occupied a strategic position in Europe. Situated at the meeting point of the North-South and East-West communication routes, the city benefits from trade of every sort encouraging the free exchange of ideas. The cathedral construction project launched in the 11th century would last for two and a half centuries to make the city pop up as one of the greatest cities in the Rhine Upper Region and in Europe. One can appreciate Strasbourg’s history and the diversity of its particularly well preserved architectural heritage.
One of the most picturesque areas is la Petite France, a real Venice of the North with its charming canals and narrow streets. Dating back to the 16th century, it has been a neighbourhood of tanners, millers and fishermen whose names can be found in the city's streets like Moulins or Fossé-des-tanneurs.
In 1988, Strasbourg’s city centre "Grande Ile" was named as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and listed as of special cultural or physical significance.
Since 1570, Strasbourg has hosted the annual Christmas market, also known as "Christkindelsmärik", making that the oldest Christmas market in France! The magic actually begins in the late afternoon as evening falls. The building facades are brought to life by decorations, Christmas lights make the windows sparkle and the city streets are filled with delicious aroma of spice and cinnamon.
The huge Christmas tree erected at the Place Kléber from mid-November has never failed to delight strollers. You are welcome to experience the unforgettable Christmas Alsatian taste !
